Max Ray Martin, DVM

Max Ray Martin, DVM attended Sanford High School in Sanford, Colorado from 1962 to 1966. From 1966 to 1967 he attended Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado.

Max was Chief Warrant Officer (CW-1) in the US Army from 1970 to 1972 as OH-6A Helicopter Pilot, Armant Officer, Ammunition Officer, Vector Control Officer, Gunnery Instructor, and Instructor Pilot.

Max served 13 months in the Republic of South Vietnam.

Max flew 425 combat mission for a total of 903 actual combat flying hours as Apache Scout Pilot with the 1st of the 7th Air Cavalry during which time he was awarded: The Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Three (3) Air Medals for Valor, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Army Aviation Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and National Defense Service Medal.

After leaving the Army, Max worked for Pennzoil Research in Shreveport, Louisiana from 1972-1976.

He was a research technician for experiments and product development in petrochemicals, and served as a national Pennzoil Branded product representative.

After leaving Pennzoil, Max flew helicopters offshore until he went back to school at LSU in Shreveport, and ultimately graduated from LSU’s School of Veterinary Medicine in 1984. After graduating veterinary school, Max, Terry, and the girls moved back to his hometown of Sanford, Colorado where he practiced large and small animal veterinary medicine until 1991.

During this time Max also served as a Conejos County Deputy Sheriff investigating animal cruelty and mutilations, and serving as the media liaison on cases involving these types of crimes.

Max was still licensed to practice in Colorado, New Mexico and Oklahoma, and he was always willing to come check on anyone's animal, big or small.From 1991 till September 2019, Max flew for Mediflight of Oklahoma. Max was a pilot for Air Kids One out of OU Medical in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, as well as flying out of local surrounding bases.

Air Kids One is responsible for stabilizing and transporting the smallest and sickest of patients to the OU Children's Hospital.

As a team, the pilots and nurses work together to ensure a safe mission prioritizing quality patient care. Max also served as the President of the Professional Helicopters Pilot Association (Local 109 OPEIU) from 2016-2019.

He also served as the President of the International Hyperbaric Medical Foundation from 2018-2022.

From 2009 through 2016 Max served as the Veterinary Medical Officer for Emergency Medical Preparedness and Response Solutions, LLC (EMPRS), where he helped train first responders, civilian medical providers, military and special operations personnel in Tactical Combat Casualty Care medical procedures.

Max is survived by his wife Terry of the home, daughter Miklyn and son-in-law Chris McMahon and grandson Maxwell of Piedmont, Oklahoma; Daughter Hilary Iannuccilli of Yukon, and grandsons Clifford John (CJ) Halbert, Renzo and Reno Iannuccilli of Las Vegas, Nevada; his sisters Kaye Lopez, Coleen Martin, and Leana McCarroll and his brothers Richard Martin, Ross Reed, and Van Reed and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother Arlene Otteson Reed and father Max Deward Martin.

Viewing will be held 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2022 at the funeral home. Celebration of life services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 17, at Trinity Baptist Church, Yukon, Oklahoma.
