Putnam City faces Mustang Friday

With its win over Owasso last week, the Mustang football team put its fates squarely in its hands.

The victory left them all alone in second place in District 6A 1-2 with only two games left.

If the Broncos win out, they will host a firstround playoff game.

Despite all that is riding on the next two weeks, Mustang coach Lee Blankenship doesn’t want his squad to look too far ahead. With Putnam City (3-5, 1-4) coming to town Friday, he wants his squad to focus solely on the Pirates.

“We need to take care of the football, try to eliminate the penalties,” Blankenship said. “We need to establish the line of scrimmage and get off to a fast start.”

Putnam City is coming off a 45-21 loss to Moore last week.

It has been a struggle for the Pirates this year. Their only three victories came against teams with a combined record of 6-19.

Yet, PCO does have weapons on both sides of the ball, which can give teams trouble.

“We just have to see what we saw in Owasso,” Mustang’s Zane Cambio said. “The same team needs to show up. We prepare every week like it’s another game. If we attack it like that, then there shouldn’t be any problems.”

With Moore (6-2, 3-2) coming to Mustang in the final week of the regular season, it could be easy to fall into the trap of overlooking the Pirates and looking ahead.

But according to Karston Keene, the Broncos are going to let that happen.

“We just need to see the same thing as last week,” Keene said. “We went into the game knowing that it didn’t matter if it was Owasso, if it was Yukon or somebody else, we were going to do our jobs.”

Putnam City at Mustang kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday at Bronco Stadium.
