Mustang softball looks for its tenth consecutive state appearance

Teams always want to host a regional, but if that doesn’t happen is there a better place to travel than a rival?

Mustang travels the short distance to Yukon on Wednesday to compete in the Yukon regionals.

“I think it is a really big deal. I think it is that one extra thing that makes us want it even more,” said Mustang’s second baseman Mallory McCoy. “I think it pushes us a little more because we want it more.”

Mustang finished the regular season with a 15-10 record and 8-5 in district, which was good enough for a third-place finish.

Also, in Yukon, will be Edmond Santa Fe, Edmond Memorial and of course the host, Yukon.

“You want those girls to be amped up and excited, but I’m going to have to do my best job to keep them level headed,” said head coach Jamie Roberts.

Yukon hosts the regional after finishing second in its district with a 19-8 record on the season. Mustang is 1-0 on the season against Yukon this season. The Lady Broncos have not lost to Yukon since Roberts took over the program four years ago.

“Well we have always beat them. So, I don’t have many worries about them,” said Mustang’s short stop McKenzie Donihoo.

Edmond Santa Fe will enter the regional with a 15-11 record but only 5-9 in district play. Mustang is 1-0 on the season against the Lady Wolves with a 12-0 run rule in the COAC tournament.

Edmond Memorial enters the regional with the worst record on the season with a 10-22 record and 3-11 in district play. But, they have something the other two opponents don’t… A victory over Mustang. The Lady Bulldogs is 1-1 on the season against Mustang with a 2-15 loss and an 8-7 victory.

Mustang will open the regional against Edmond Santa Fe at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Yukon High School.

“It is a great draw for us, we are excited to be going there and just trying to really focus on playing our best game,” Roberts said.

As the defending state champions Mustang looks to make it to the state tournament for the 10th consecutive time going back to the 2008 softball season.
