Southwest Covenant volleyball set for regional play

The Southwest Covenant volleyball team will take its talents to the east side of the state Thursday to compete in a Class 4A regional tournament for the right to go to state.

The Patriots are looking for their third consecutive trip to the state tournament, but their first in Class 4A. The previous two trips were in Class 3A.

Southwest Covenant will compete in the Tahlequah-Sequoyah regional with Verdigris and Oologah-Talala as the other two teams.

The regional tournament will open at 4:30 p.m. Thursday with Sequoyah and Oologah-Talala followed by the Patriots and Verdigris at 6 p.m. The winners of those two matches will play for the regional title at 7:30 p.m. The winner of the regional championship match will advance to the state tournament.

The regional is a single-elimination format, so losers will be done for the season.

“We are going for three-straight years to qualify for the state tournament,” Southwest Covenant coach Samantha Lindsey said. “I think we match up well with the other teams in the regional. We need to eliminate the little errors and be more consistent, but if we come to play, I believe we will be alright.”

Patriot junior Macie Noland echoed her coaches’ comments.

“We are confident,” she said. “We will be fine. We need to stay focused and remember what we are there for, but I am confident in everyone.”

Southwest Covenant hosted Oklahoma Christian School on Monday and fell 3-1. The Patriots won their first game over the Saints in program history.

Southwest Covenant lost the first two games 25-18 and 25-19. The Patriots won the third game 25-18 to force a fourth where OCS won 25-15 to close the match.

“We didn’t practice Friday because of the flooding that was going on,” Lindsey said. “I was a little nervous going into tonight’s match because of that, but I thought our girls played well. We did a lot of good things. I thought we came together as a team and didn’t get down on ourselves. I am overall pleased with how we played.”

Thursday, the Patriots took on Destiny Christian on the road and won in a three-game sweep. Southwest Covenant won the first game 25-18, the second game 25-13 and the third 25-20.

The Patriots concluded the regular season Tuesday with a road match at Casady. Southwest Covenant entered its final match with a 22-7 record.
