Grocery delivery service to launch Thursday

Mustang and Yukon residents could soon have their groceries delivered to their doorstep.

Instacart, an online and mobile application based delivery service, offers residents the opportunity to shop at retailers like Homeland, Whole Foods Market, Natural Grocers and Petco and have their groceries delivered to their doorsteps in as little as an hour.

The delivery service began in 2012 in San Francisco and has expanded to more than 70 markets nationwide. The Oklahoma City metropolitan area is its newest expansion.

Mustang and Yukon are just two of the Oklahoma cities included in the expansion, other areas gaining the service are Norman, Tuttle, Bridge Creek, Newcastle, Blanchard, Oklahoma City, Union City, Moore, Valley Brook, Del City, Smith Village, Midwest City, Bethany, Woodlawn Park, Lake Aluma, Forest Park, Warr Acres, Nichols Hills, The Village, Edmond, Piedmont, Goldsby, Hall Park and Witcher.

Instacart is meant to save customers time by allowing trained shoppers to do their shopping for them.

“Instacart is great. It really does save people time,” Instacart representative Stephanie Thomas said. “It allows them to save more time with their families or a lot of people use the service when they’re working a lot, so it’s just a really convenient and easy service to use if you’re busy and want to get some time back.”

Residents interested in using the service would just visit www.instacart.com or download the mobile application then type in the zip code. Based on the location, Instacart will show the customer what stores are available and allow them to select or search items to add to their list. The customer then would choose either a one-hour or two-hour delivery time, or could choose a window of time for a delivery time later in the day.

First time users receive free delivery and $25 off an order of $35 or more with the code “HIOKC25.”

They also have the opportunity to receive a free one year subscription of Instacart Express until July 15. Instacart Express membership offers unlimited free grocery delivery on orders more than $35. The membership isn’t required for orders, but Thomas said could benefit shoppers if they plan on ordering more than twice a month. The Instacart Express membership usually costs $149 per year. General delivery fee is $5.95.

Instacart is also adding more than 100 new jobs to Oklahoma City areas by hiring on shoppers. People interested in applying to be a shopper can visit www.careers.instacart.com.

Interested shoppers are first guided through an online tutorial to explain more about Instacart and how the service works. If they’re still interested, they would then meet with Instacart representatives in person for an interview and to learn more about the Oklahoma City-specific information.

Shoppers are paid on a commission per delivery.

“We’re really excited to be launching it in Oklahoma City,” Thomas said.
