Mustang wrestling: Broncos send five wrestlers to state tournament

The Mustang wrestling team competed in the 6A West Regional Wrestling Tournament at Yukon High School this past weekend and five Bronco grapplers qualified for the 6A State Championship Wrestling Tournament.

The state wrestling tournament will take place Friday and Saturday at the State Fairgrounds Arena in Oklahoma City.

Trey Edwards at 132-pounds, Gage McBride at 170-pounds, Joe Lupton at 120-pounds, Cameron Picklo at 113-pounds and Cooper Meadows at 160-pounds were the five Mustang wrestlers who qualified for the 6A state tournament.

Edwards had a record of 2-1 in the regional tournament with one fall and finished second. The 132-pounder lost 4-2 to his Edmond North counterpart in double-overtime in the championship bout.

McBride finished the regional tournament with a 3-1 record and three falls and took second-place. The 170-pounder was pinned in the first period in the championship match by his Choctaw opponent.

Lupton had a record of 3-1 in the regional tournament with one fall and took second-place. The 120-pounder lost 11-0 to his Edmond North counterpart in the championship bout.

Picklo finished 3-1 in the regional tournament with two falls and took third-place. The 113-pounder defeated Yukon’s Studd Morris in the third and fourth-place match.

Meadows had a record of 4-1 in the regional tournament with one fall and finished in third place. The 160-pounder defeated his Edmond Santa Fe counterpart in the third and fourth-place match.

In the 106-pound weight class, Justin Austin had a record of 0-2 in the regional tournament. In the 126-pound weight division, Weldon Bryan had a record of 0-2 in the two-day event. In the 138-pound weight bracket, Mustang did not have a wrestler.

In the 145-pound weight class, Joey Carter had a record of 2-2 with two falls in the regional tournament. In the 152-pound weight division, Brock Ross finished with a 1-2 record and in the 182-pound weight bracket, Colin Campbell had a 1-2 mark with one fall.

In the 195-pound weight class, Arin Copas had a 3-2 record with one fall in the regional tournament. Juan Espinosa finished with a 1-2 record and one fall in the 220-pound weight division and in the 285-pound weight bracket, Blake Russell went 4-2 with two falls in the two-day event.

In the team standings, Mustang finished fifth overall with 141 points. Choctaw took first with 243 points, Edmond North took second with 207.5 points, Yukon took third with 175.5 points, Westmoore took fourth with 147.5 points, Deer Creek took sixth with 124 points, Midwest City took seventh with 111 points, Edmond Memorial took eighth with 100 points, Putnam City took ninth with 79 points, Edmond Santa Fe took 10th with 72 points, Norman took 11th with 71 points, Putnam City North took 12th with 59.5 points, Moore took 13th with 43 points, Lawton took 14th with 24 points, U.S. Grant took 15th with 11 points and Putnam City West took 16th with nine points.
