Mustang wrestling: Broncos look to make statement at state tournament

The Mustang wrestling team qualified five wrestlers for the 6A State Championship Wrestling Tournament after their performance at the regional tournament this past weekend.

The 6A state tournament will begin Friday and conclude Saturday evening with the entire tournament taking place at the State Fairgrounds Arena in Oklahoma City.

Trey Edwards at 132-pounds, Gage McBride at 170-pounds and Joe Lupton at 120-pounds enter the state tournament as No. 2 seeds. Cameron Picklo at 113-pounds and Cooper Meadows at 160-pounds enter the state tournament as No. 3 seeds.

Here’s a weight-by-weight break down of the brackets Mustang will have wrestlers competing in at the 6A state tournament:

In the 132-pound weight bracket, Edwards will be the No. 2 seed in the west and he will take on Dylan Schickram of Ponca City, who is the No. 3 seed from the east. Sand Springs’ Daton Fix is the No. 1 seed in the east and will take on Midwest City’s Marquez Edwards, who is the No. 4 seed in the west. Edmond North’s Brandon Bright is the No. 1 seed in the west and he will take on Owasso’s Baylor Smith, who is the No. 4 seed in the east. Norman North’s Sam Avant is the No. 2 seed in the east and will take on Norman’s Josh Suter, who is the No. 3 seed in the west.

In the 170-pound weight bracket, McBride is the No. 2 seed in the west and will take on Union’s Darius Boone, who is the No. 3 seed in the east. Stillwater’s Christian Bahl is the No. 1 seed in the east and will take on Edmond Santa Fe’s Joe Speno, who is the No. 4 seed in the west. Choctaw’s Zane Coleman is the No. 1 seed in the west and will take on Ponca City’s Lane Newlin, who is the No. 4 seed in the east. Sand Springs’ Zane Basma is the No. 2 seed in the east and will take on Edmond Memorial’s Sam Hensley, who is the No. 3 seed in the west.

In the 120-pound weight bracket, Lupton is the No. 2 seed in the west and will take on Bartlesville’s Laif Jones, who is the No. 3 seed in the east. Broken Arrow’s Tyler Lawley is the No. 1 seed in the east and will take on Mustang’s Noah Hanscom, who is the No. 4 seed in the west. Edmond North’s Paxton Rosen is the No. 1 seed in the west and will take on Muskogee’s Kyri Beasley, who is the No. 4 seed in the east. Sand Springs’ Michael Ritchey is the No. 2 seed in the east and he will take on Choctaw’s Andy Schlaepfer, who is the No. 3 seed in the west.

In the 113-pound weight bracket, Picklo will be the No. 3 seed and take on Sand Springs’ Tanner Ward, who is the No. 2 seed in the east. Westmoore’s Canon Randall is the No. 1 seed in the west and will take on Ponca City’s Karson Bellmard, who is the No. 4 seed in the east. Sapulpa’s Brandon Blose is the No. 1 seed in the east and will take on Yukon’s Studd Morris, who is the No. 4 seed in the west. Choctaw’s Colt Newton is the No. 2 seed in the west and will take on Bartlesville’s Brayden Strachan, who is the No. 3 seed in the east.

In the 160-pound weight bracket, Meadows is the No. 3 seed in the west and he will take on Broken Arrow’s Caleb Wise, who is the No. 1 seed in the east. Yukon’s Chase Vincent is the No. 2 seed in the west and will take on Stillwater’s Connor Wilcoxen, who is the No. 3 seed in the east. Choctaw’s Jaryn Curry is the No. 1 seed in the west and will take on Sand Springs’ Noah Amy, who is the No. 4 seed in the east. Norman North’s Joseph Messer is the No. 2 seed in the east and will take on Edmond Santa Fe’s Williams Depona, who is the No. 4 seed in the west.
