Jessica Purdum named Skyview Teacher of the Year

Jessica Purdum was named Skyview Elementary School’s 2016 Teacher of the Year.  Purdum is a second grade English/language arts and social studies teacher at Skyview.  A 12-year teaching veteran, she is enjoying her fifth year with Yukon Public Schools.  Purdum previously taught second grade in Putnam City Schools before joining the Yukon Public Schools family.
Purdum was humbled to be chosen by her peers at Skyview for this high honor.
“Skyview is filled with incredible educators, and it is truly an honor to be chosen to represent them,” she said.
Purdum is a proud member of the Oklahoma Education Association and Yukon Professional Educators Association and has served as both a mentor teacher as well as a member of the leadership team at Skyview during her tenure in the district.  She is also an active volunteer in her church’s children’s ministries.
One of her favorite aspects about teaching second grade is parlaying her passion for reading and books into helping beginning readers become confident and independent readers.
“My favorite moments are when a student begins to believe what you’ve told them about themselves all along. They realize they can do it and they are good enough to read that first chapter book,” Purdum said. “There is nothing quite like watching a child develop a lifelong love of reading as a direct result of their own hard work and determination.”
Purdum has lived in Yukon for nine years with her husband and two children and plans to remain here raising her family indefinitely.  She is grateful her own children are already benefitting from attending a school district that is both supported by the community and makes every effort to put student needs first.
