Kaitlin Sagar-Smith was named Yukon Middle School’s Teacher of the Year for 2016. Kaitlin is a special education teacher and currently teaches seventh grade math. This is her ninth-year teaching and her seventh year in Yukon Public Schools. She taught in Manalapan, NJ for two years before joining the YPS family.
Mrs. Smith was humbled and delighted by her fellow teachers selecting her as Teacher of the Year. “The teachers I have been fortunate to work with at YMS have helped shape the teacher I am. I am honored to represent such a talented and dedicated group of educators,” Smith expressed.
Kaitlin has served as a mentor teacher and a member of the leadership team at YMS. She also provides tutoring to students in the mornings before school.
One of her favorite things about her day is co-teaching along with fellow teachers. Smith enjoys the opportunity to provide supports and instruction for students of all levels and abilities. “My students in the general education classes often struggle with the content they are learning, but have the basic foundation needed to achieve. It amazes me to see their confidence grow as they begin to realize they can succeed,” remarked Smith.
Mrs. Smith moved to Oklahoma from her home state of New Jersey after her husband finished his service with the Marine Corps. She feels fortunate to have found a “school home” in a district that promotes learning for all students, and a community invested in education and supportive of teachers.
