Trosper named Independence Elementary Teacher of the Year

Zachary Trosper is the 2016 Teacher of the Year for Independence Elementary School. At IES he teaches 4th and 5th grade general music, 5th grade choir, and is the director of The Yukon Ukes. Zach is in his fourth-year teaching and his second year at Yukon Public Schools.

“Other teachers in my position often go underappreciated. This award reaffirms that at IES, the faculty and staff believe in the education of the “whole” child and not just an education in the core subjects.”

Zach is from Carl Junction, Missouri. He holds a Bachelor in Music Education from Pittsburg State University and a Master of Music in Percussion Performance from Oklahoma City University.  His first two years teaching were in Putnam City at Will Rogers Elementary School.  Occasionally, Zach assists with the Yukon High School marching band and is a member of his church’s gospel choir. He loves spending time with his wife, Patricia and son, Lander.

“One of my favorite things about my job is the freedom and encouragement that I get to try new things. Just last year I picked up a ukulele for the first time and taught myself how to play. From there everything snowballed. Now I have 30 ukuleles in my classroom and I’m teaching my students how to play the instrument. And beginning this year we have an ensemble that meets three times a week called The Yukon Ukes. Without that support from the administration, faculty, and especially the community, our students would not have such a great opportunity.”
