Wrestling: No. 8 Mustang opens season with 47-24 loss at No. 4 Edmond North

EDMOND – No. 4 Mustang started strong, but lost nine matches in a 47-24 season-opening loss at No. 4 Edmond North Thursday.

Joe Lupton (Jr.) and returning state qualifier Cameron Picklo (So.) kicked things off with falls at 113 and 120 pounds. Lupton pinned Jacob Alexander at the 2:48 mark in the first period and Picklo, wrestling two weight classes higher than last season, pinned Trent Higginbotham in the second period for a 12-0 lead.

Edmond North (1-0) answered Mustang’s hot start with six straight wins, including two falls and a default for a 31-12 advantage.

North’s Paxton Rosen, returning 113-pound state champion, pinned Tyler Morgan (So.) in the first period at 126 pounds before Trey Edwards (Sr.) lost a 7-2 decision to Brandon Bright at 132. Matt Slocum (Jr.) lost a major-decision to Drake Vannoy at 138 pounds followed by a default at 145. Joey Carter (Jr.) fell to returning 132-pound state champion Kruz Simmons at 152 pounds before Haden Harper (So.) fell to Brady Sifford in the first period at 160 to close out the Huskies’ run.

Returning 145-pound state placer Cooper Meadows (Jr.) and Gage McBride (Sr.) narrowed the deficit with two straight wins.

Meadows pulled out a gritty, 11-7 decision over Walker Brown at 170 pounds followed by another tough win by McBride over Noah Hooks at 182, cutting North’s lead to 31-18.

Arin Copas (Sr.) started at 195 pounds, replacing 2016 state runner-up Kaden Truelove. He lost a major decision to Blake Minnick before Juan Espinoza (So.) fell to Nathan Seaty at 220. Trey Cossey (Sr.) cut into North’s lead, pinning Zane Bailey with just 10 seconds left in the heavyweight match. Justin Austin (Fr.) fell to Nate Becker in the first period at 106 pounds to close out the dual.

Mustang returns to action Tuesday, hosting Class 3A No. 4 Heritage Hall at 7 p.m. inside the Mustang Event Center.
