Yukon cross country teams set to compete at regional meet
The Yukon boys and girls cross country teams will try and earn their way into the 6A state cross country meet on Saturday in Norman at the regional meet.
The top seven teams in the regional meet in both the boys and girls competitions will qualify to move on to the state meet, which takes place next Saturday at Edmond Santa Fe High School.
The boys’ race will begin at 12:45 p.m. with the girls’ start taking place at noon in Norman. If the boys are able to qualify, it will make it 10 consecutive years making the 6A state meet and the 11th out of 12 years.
Before that streak began, the Miller harriers had only made the state meet once in 29 years.
“If we can run our best, we are looking at a fourth or fifth-place finish at the regional,” Yukon boys coach Matt Parent said. “If we don’t run our best, we are going to be cutting it pretty close with some other teams on whether we advance or not. We have had a lot of success here in the past decade, so we want to keep that going.”
The seven boys Yukon will send to the regional meet on Saturday will be Elijah Ankrom, Noah Hanscom, Kendall Watson, Kolby McCoy, Mikael Stamm, Conner Cosgrove and Dakota Adams.
“I want our guys to live in a bubble until Saturday,” Parent said. “We don’t have enough depth to afford any injuries this year. In the near future, it might be a different story. We have some really talented middle school teams that are coming up in the program, but this year, we have to make sure we are ready to go.”
On the girls’ side of the course, it will be Hannah Delgado, Jessica Canales, Desiree Walker, Mckenzie Brown, Cristen Rupel, Abigail Janka and Caelyn Cox running in the regional meet.
The results from the regional, will be in this coming Wednesday’s Yukon Review.
