Season-ending momentum is crucial. And after a dominating, regional performance, Mustang is clicking at the right time.
The Broncos punched their ticked to the Class 6A State Tournament for the sixth straight year with a 3-0 sweep over Putnam City West, Putnam City North and Norman North Tuesday and Wednesday in their regional tournament at home. They cruised in the opener and final and squeaked through the semifinals in a seven-inning thriller.
GAME 1: MUSTANG 12, PUTNAM CITY WEST 0 (5 innings)
Mustang rolled past a weak PC West squad, scoring 12 runs on 13 walks and six hits in a run-rule.
Kaitlyn Thomas (Jr.) finished with the team’s lone, multi-hit performance, going 2-for-2 with an RBI, a walk and run. Kayla Mantooth (Fr.) drove in three runs with a double and Kylie Dodson (Jr.) plated a pair on two, bases-loaded walks. Dodson, MacKenzie Donihoo (So.), Zoe Jones (Jr.) and Karis Clark (Jr.) each walked twice.
Anna Hammer (Jr.) picked up the easy win, allowing two hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
GAME 2: MUSTANG 2, PUTNAM CITY NORTH 0
The Broncos couldn’t scratch together a run on three hits in the first six innings, but with three knocks in the seventh, Mustang manufactured two runs to reach the regional final with a win over PC North.
Alee Ashbaugh (So.) pinch-hit for Hammer with one away and singled. Donihoo followed with a double to left before a fielder’s choice by Jones that plated Ashbaugh for a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Kylie Dodson drove Jones home with a single to left for a 2-0 lead. Donihoo and Dodson each finished with two hits.
Dodson pitched a complete game no-hitter with eight strikeouts in the win. She threw 97 pitches and allowed just one base-runner.
GAME 3: MUSTANG 17, NORMAN NORTH 0 (5 innings)
With state just one win away, Mustang didn’t hesitate in seizing the opportunity.
The Broncos cruised through Norman North, 17-0 in five innings Thursday in the regional championship game, fueled by 20 hits, five walks and a dominating performance by Dodson in the circle.
Audrie Morrison (Jr.) and Jones led the way offensively, combining for four, extra-base hits and seven RBIs. Jones crushed two homeruns for four RBIs while Morrison went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs. Mantooth, Dodson, Thomas, Hammer and Amelya Huggins (Jr.) all finished with multi-hit games as well.
Dodson allowed just one hit in her five-inning, complete game. She finished with two strikeouts and a walk to wrap up her second win in the regional.
