Mustang’s premiere events center, which is home to a host of athletics and special events, has been recognized as the 2016 People’s Choice Award by the Oklahoma State School Boards Association.
Superintendent Sean McDaniel announced the award recognition for the 58,000 square foot facility designed by MA+ Architecture during a school board meeting. The design firm previously built baseball locker rooms, baseball/softball training facilities, football field house and football stadium, all on the high school campus.
The event center was part of the 2012 bond issue that also made possible the construction of Prairie View Elementary (opened August 2014), Canyon Ridge Intermediate Center (August 2013), a new Mustang Elementary gymnasium and the renovation of Mustang Mid-High into Mustang Horizon Intermediate Center (August 2013).
The MHS Event Center is nearly three times larger than the old high school gymnasium, constructed in 1964. The facility is used for basketball, wrestling, volleyball and special events. There are 2,240 fixed seats, nearly doubling the seating of the current gym. The facility includes nine locker rooms for varsity, junior varsity, freshman boys’ and girls’ basketball, girls’ volleyball and boys’ and girls’ tennis.
A training room, fitness area and coaches’ offices also are included. An upper and lower concourse features restrooms and concessions. The event center will feature a plaza-style entry and secure area for players and coaches.
The events center costs $11.2 million to construct and was completed in December 2015. It also has been touted as an outstanding design by the American School & University.
