Tumbling to regionals: Yukon cheer squad looks to bring home back-to-back regional championships

YHS will compete in Large Co-Ed division Saturday

The Yukon varsity cheer squad looks to go back-to-back this Saturday when they compete in the 2016 regional cheerleading competition.

The YHS cheer team will compete in the Large Co-Ed division, which begins at 4:30 p.m. at Midwest City High School.

“The team has been working extremely hard since May,” Yukon High School cheer sponsor Tiffiany Webb said. “We had a great time at OU’s cheer camp. We are excited for the regional competition. We won it last year, so we definitely want to win it again this year and we believe we can.”

Yukon is the defending Large Co-Ed regional champions and they are looking to bring home the top prize for the second-consecutive year.

The Large Co-Ed division will have a total of nine teams in the group. The other eight schools competing against Yukon will be Choctaw, Edmond Santa Fe, Guymon, Lawton MacArthur, Moore, Norman, Westmoore and Woodward.

The Yukon cheer squad has been practicing for the regional competition since May and they attended the University of Oklahoma cheer camp over the summer.

The YHS Large Co-Ed cheer team is made up of 21 members and is coached by Mandy Thomson. There are six seniors, four juniors, three sophomores and eight freshmen.

Seniors:

Paige Schenck (captain), Aubree Van Meter (captain), Chyann Cypert, Cassidy Kane, Sara Spahn and Gracie Weaver

Juniors:

Lauren Henry, Aspen Holder, Colten Lee and Ruthie Ross

Sophomores:

Piper Bjerk, Madison Browning and Rylee Newport

Freshmen:

Kinlee Bell, Drew Davis, Mya Dougherty, Lauren Dunn, Sutton Demuth, Echo Reece, Kaitlynn Strong and Sophie Weaver

Team captains and seniors Paige Schenck and Aubree Van Meter both believe the squad can hit a flawless routine on Saturday.

When asked what it would take to be successful at the regional competition and bring home another regional title, they both had this to say:

“We know we can hit our routine perfectly,” Schenck and Van Meter said. “If we can do that, we believe we can win it again.”
