Cross Country: Broncos sweep Panther Open Run after hosting 2016 Mustang Harrier

Mustang’s cross country teams are off to a hot start in 2016.

Both the girls and boys captured wins at the 2016 Putnam City North Panther Open Run Tuesday after the girls placed first and the boys fourth at the 2016 Mustang Harrier at Wild Horse Park last Thursday.

Madison Cornelius (Sr.), who recently picked up the sport, opened her high school career by placing first at the Mustang Harrier and runner-up at the Panther Open Run. She finished with a time of 20:49.27 at Mustang and with a time of 21:36.60 at Putnam City North.

The Broncos dominated Jenks, Edmond Santa Fe, Stillwater, Capitol Hill, Guthrie and U.S. Grant in the 5A-6A 5K run at Wild Horse Park.

Paris Nance (Fr.), Isabella Hochstetler (Sr.) and Tyler Schwemley (Sr.) followed Cornelius, finishing fourth, fifth and sixth individually. Emma Downing (Jr.) finished 11th, Rachel Hamel (So.) finished 13th and Savannah Basco (Jr.) finished 18th.

Schwemley cracked the top-5 at PC North, finishing third while Downing (sixth) and Hochstetler (seventh) each finished in the top-10.Basco finished 11th and Hamel finished 15th.

Cameron Mills (Jr.) paced the Bronco boys, finishing third in both the Harrier and the Panther Open Run. He broke the 17-minute mark with a time of 16:58.03 at Wild Horse Park and finished with a time of 17:32.50 at Putnam City North.

Parker Huckabay (So.) finished 12th as Mustang’s only other runner in the top-20. Matthew Torres (So.) finished 23rd, Kaleb Brooks (Fr.) finished 26th, Chris Chestnut (Jr.) finished 28th and Benji VanAken (So.) finished 29th.

Edmond North captured the boys Harrier title while Capitol Hill finished second and Stillwater finished third.

The Broncos squeaked out their victory at Putnam City North, finishing just three points ahead of Capitol Hill.

Behind Mills’ third-place finish, Huckabay cracked the top-10 in eighth. Fabian Ramirez (Sr.) finished 13th in his first race of the year while Torres finished 16th to round out Mustang’s top-20 runners. Chestnut finished 28th and VanAken finished 32nd.
