Football preview: Offensive looks to be more dynamic in 2016

Running game will be the focal point to start the season

The Millers are returning five starters from the 2015 offense, including starting quarterback, senior Trevor Smith.

Joining Smith will be senior running back Michael Cooper, junior receiver/running back Jalen Barnes, senior offensive tackle Madison Wrather and senior offensive guard Denton Sanchez.

“We have a good core group of guys coming back on offense,” Yukon coach and play caller Brian Sauser said. “It’s always a great thing when you bring back your starting quarterback. Trevor Smith is a guy that we are going to count on to be a leader but also make plays big plays for us.”

Sauser said the running backs have stood out to him throughout preseason practice.

“I really like our core group of running backs with Michael Cooper, Tyrese Antwine and Jalen Barnes,” Sauser said. “They are bigger and stronger with the football than they were a year ago. I think our running game is going to be very strong for us this season.”

Sauser also said he understands you can’t be a successful offense and not have a strong offensive line.

“Our offensive line is going to be huge for us this season,” Sauser said. “We return two starters on the left side in seniors Madison Wrather and Denton Sanchez and then bring in junior Jamar Smith and junior Gabe Grulkey to anchor the right side of the line.”

Sauser said the goal is to have a well-balanced offense but the running game is ahead of the passing game at this point.

“We want to be an offense that is effective with both the run and the pass,” Sauser said. “We have the pieces in place to accomplish that but we will try and establish our running game and control the line of scrimmage.”
