Football gets final tune-up with home scrimmage

Bixby, Choctaw take on Millers at Miller Stadium

The Yukon football team will open the 2016 regular season next Friday at 7 p.m. against their arch-rival Mustang at Miller Stadium but before the Millers and Broncos do battle on the gridiron, YHS had one more scrimmage to prepare for September 2.

The Millers hosted 6A-2 powers Bixby and Choctaw at Miller Stadium on Thursday night under stormy skies in Yukon.

It was the second scrimmage of the preseason for Yukon, as they traveled to Midwest City last week to take on the Bombers, Norman North and Southmoore.

“We wanted to really challenge ourselves with our scrimmages this year,” Yukon coach Brian Sauser said. “We wanted a clear picture of where we are as a team going into the regular season. I believe we got that with the teams we played.”

Midwest City is one of the most talented teams in the state and will be a force to be reckoned with in 6A-2 this season. Norman North is always a tough opponent with talented and disciplined players. Southmoore is arguably the best team in the state this season and has some of the best players in the state. They should challenge for a 6A-1 state championship.

Choctaw is a well-coached football team and has solid playmakers and size and Bixby is the two-time defending 6A-2 state champions.

Now that scrimmage season is complete, the preseason is over for Yukon. They will now turn their full attention to Mustang and next Friday night at Miller Stadium.
