Millerettes outlast Lady Lions in five-set dual
The Yukon volleyball team opened the 2016 regular season this past weekend at the Norman Tournament at Norman High School.
The Millerettes played five matches overall with three being played on Friday in a best-of-three sets format and two being played on Saturday with a best-of-five sets format.
Yukon closed out the weekend with its most exciting match of the two-day event. YHS defeated Moore three sets to two in a five-set thriller that went down to the wire.
“I thought we competed really hard all weekend,” Yukon coach Rachel Allred said. “We finished the tournament really well with a tough, hard-fought win over Moore.”
The first set of the match went to Yukon in neck-and-neck battle 26-24. The Millerettes also won the second set but with a little more ease at 25-20. Set No. 3 went in favor of Moore in another back-and-forth tussle 26-24 and then MHS took the fourth set 25-20 to send the match in a fifth-set tie-breaker.
The final set was a barnburner between the two schools, but Yukon outlasted Moore 19-17 to go on to win the match.
For the match, Yukon finished with 196 digs, 36 assists, 49 kills, 26 blocks and 14 aces.
In the other four matches of the tournament, the Millerettes fell to Ponca City three sets to one set, lost to Mustang two sets to one set, got beat by Norman two sets to none and lost to Bixby two sets to none.
Against Ponca City, Yukon lost set No. 1 25-16, won the second set 25-19, fell in the third set 25-16 and dropped the fourth set 25-18. The Millerettes had 169 digs, 22 assists, 27 kills, 25 blocks and 10 aces.
Against Mustang, YHS dropped the first set 25-14, won the second 27-25 and fell in the third set 25-16. Yukon had 119 digs, 15 assists, 19 kills, 13 blocks and three aces.
Against Norman, the Millerettes lost the first set 25-17 and the second set 25-20. YHS had 79 digs, 18 assists, 17 kills, 19 blocks and two aces.
Against Bixby, Yukon dropped the first set 25-20 and the second set 25-15. They had 60 digs, 12 assists, 17 kills, 23 blocks and one ace.
Overall, the Millerettes had 523 digs, 103 assists, 129 kills, 106 blocks and 30 aces in five matches in the two-day tournament.
Yukon was back in action on Tuesday evening in their home-opener against Putnam City North. The Millerettes will play at 6 p.m. at home tonight against Norman North.
