George Preston McWhirter, age 88, longtime Mustang resident and former Mustang Mayor, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, July 25, 2016 after a short time of declining health. He was born on April 3, 1928 in Sentinel, Oklahoma to George W. and Bernice (Cunningham) McWhirter.
He grew up in Sentinel and went into service before finishing up high school. He served in both the Army Air Corp and the Air Force Reserves at the end of WWII and during the Korean Conflict. Immediately after his military service he returned to school and received his high school diploma from Central High School in OKC. He attended college while working thirty years for Western Electric (Lucent) as a Computer Systems Analyst.
He moved to Mustang in 1964 where he farmed and was a home builder. He served on the Mustang City Council and was two-time Mayor of Mustang. George was a longtime active member of Chisholm Heights Baptist Church where he was a Deacon and had served on several committees, including the Building Committee.
George was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Glen, David, Richard and two sisters Opal and Carolyn.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years Katie of the home, two sons George Preston McWhirter, Jr. and wife Patty of Allen, Texas, Jerrel McWhirter of Mustang, three daughters Susan Walcher and husband Guy of Mustang, Sandra Boyles and husband Dr. Bobby of Binger, and Sharon Recknagel and husband Dr. Chris of Mustang.; also by 14 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three sisters Marge Groff of Hydro, Shirley Lawson of OKC and Nancy Dew of Guthrie.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 29, 2016 at Chisholm Heights Baptist Church, Mustang with interment following with military honors at Mustang Cemetery. Arrangements are by McNeil’s Funeral Service.
